Apple TV Video & Audio Settings

Go to:
Settings > Video and Audio

  • Format: 4K SDR
  • Match Content: Turn all options ON

Why?

You probably have it set to Dolby Vision (DV), which sounds great in theory—but in practice, it’s not.

Dolby Vision forces all content through DV, even if it wasn’t meant for it.

The Fix

Setting the output to SDR ensures the native output is SDR, but with Match Content ON, Apple TV will automatically switch to:

  • HDR when playing HDR content
  • SDR when playing SDR content
  • DV when playing Dolby Vision content

This won’t change anything for DV content, but SDR and HDR will look much better. Also, you might realize you’ve never even seen your TV’s SDR settings before!

Steps to Ensure Everything Sticks

  1. Set the output to SDR in Apple TV and adjust the settings.
  2. Change the output to HDR, adjust the settings.
  3. Change the output to DV, adjust the settings.
  4. Switch back to SDR and confirm all settings stayed in place.
